To lose weight, you sometimes need a little help.

Obesity is one of the biggest public health issues in the UK.

As of 2014, 24.3% of men and 26.9% of women were considered overweight, with a BMI above 30. By 2050 those numbers could be up to 60% and 50% respectively.

Losing weight is easy for some people, but others struggle and may need a hand with getting to a healthy weight.

The NHS funds weight loss surgery. In most areas, patients will need to have a BMI of 50. This means that a person who is 175cm tall would need to weigh 154kg to be considered!

Sometimes, drug therapies just don’t cut it and one diet turns into a whole string of yo-yo diets without the results you’re after, but with a whole lot of frustration!

For those who don’t meet NHS requirements and fail time and again with their weight loss efforts, the National Obesity Surgery Centre provides a first-class alternative.

They provide a number of weight loss treatments, from gastric balloons to surgical procedures, some of which can even permanently reduce the size of your stomach.

A Gastric Balloon works without actually having surgery. The balloon is passed into the stomach and once in place, fills around 70% of the stomach’s capacity, thereby reducing the volume of food consumed.

Patients report feeling less hungry and satisfied for longer when they eat. There are two options if you are considering a balloon. The Orbera Balloon stays in place for six months and works in conjunction with a 12 month Support Programme; the Spatz Balloon stays in for a whole year with an 18 month Support Programme.

The Gastric Balloon Programme and the NOSC Support Team help you to take control and achieve a healthy relationship with food using various techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Coaching and diet and nutritional education.

This will enable you to maintain your weight loss once the device has been removed. Patients who have a Gastric Balloon fitted lose on average between 12.7 and 50 kilos. That’s up to a kilo a week, which is usually given as the maximum recommended weekly weight loss.

The Gastric Band is probably the best known of all weight loss procedures. It works by restricting the amount of food you can eat and by multiplying the messages sent to your brain during the course of your meal.

It comes with the added bonus of being adjustable without being time-limited and can be adapted to suit any changes in your life. It has also been proven to reverse type 2 diabetes in obese patients, especially when used in combination with lifestyle changes.

If you struggle with maintaining discipline when on a diet, and live a busy life to boot, a Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) is also an option to help you shed kilos.

In a sixty to ninety minute procedure, your stomach is divided, resulting in a new mini stomach, which is then joined to a loop of the small intestine.

Your ‘new’ stomach’s smaller size means you’ll feel fuller sooner and the fact that food bypasses between two to four metres of intestine alters the hormonal balance in your body, thus controlling hunger.

One of the most popular procedures is a Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve). Under general anaesthesia, a large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving only a sleeve or tube shaped smaller stomach behind.

Removing the larger part of the stomach doesn’t just mean less capacity, the procedure also removes the part of the stomach that produces Ghrelin, the hormone responsible for hunger.

As a result, appetite is significantly reduced and portion size controlled. With the help of the NOSC Support Team, you will start to make better nutritional and lifestyle choices.

A similar, but less invasive, procedure is Gastric Plication. Under general anaesthesia, your surgeon will fold the stomach in on itself and suture in place.

By creating this internal fold, the stomach’s capacity is reduced by about 85%.

As a result of decreasing the size of your stomach the amount of food you can consume is considerably less than before.

You will experience a feeling of fullness after eating only a small portion and that feeling of fullness will last for longer. Although it is considerably reduced in size, your stomach will continue to function normally.

After treatment, you will receive first class care and support from the National Obesity Surgery Centre’s Support Team – including nutritional advice and behavioral coaching to keep you motivated and on track to reaching your weight loss goals.

NOSC also go the extra mile for their patients to help them transform their body, get fit and healthy and make the most of their treatment by giving them the opportunity to speak to a fully qualified Personal Trainer who will design a tailor made exercise programme to suit their needs.
