POLOKWANE – It goes without saying that eating healthily and exercising are important aspects of our everyday lives.

However, with today’s fast-paced lifestyle not many people manage to find time to go to the gym. To help get around this, there are a few things one can do to stay fit which do not require going to gym.

Thabo Ntuli, personal trainer at Virgin Active Peter Mokaba, shares his top tips with us on how to stay fit with a busy schedule.

“It is understandable that most people do not have time to go to the gym to exercise but it is important to make time for health and wellness because it helps your mind and body keep up with your busy schedule. There are a number of smart phone applications that help you stay fit and motivated from the comfort of your own home” Thabo explains.

He shares some exercises that can be done without machinery or going to the gym:

Outdoor exercises:

• Jogging – cardiovascular exercises are the best way to burn fat and lose weight.

• High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) – is a form of interval training, an exercise strategy which involves alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less-intense recovery periods. HIIT is a form of cardiovascular exercise as well and sessions may vary from 10-30 minutes.

“You can make it interesting by doing these exercises with your family, friends or as a couple, using a can of canned food as weights, and chairs as equipment. Using your own body to workout is a great way to exercise as you learn to carry your own body weight and how to be light on your feet,” he explains.

Easy exercises to do anywhere or anytime using your own body weight:

• Body squats.

• Star jumps.

• Lunges.

• High knees.

• Push-ups (knee/ lady push-ups).

• Sit-ups.

Note: Do 15 if these exercises each for five sets (rounds) with a 30 second to one minute rest period between sets. Or do each exercise for 20 seconds with a 10 second rest between exercises.

Thabo adds that this workout can even be done during your lunch-hour which will be beneficial for the mind and body and will get the creative juices flowing. He hosts bootcamps every Saturday morning at 07:00 behind Virgin Active Peter Mokaba called T Sculpt. It is open to anyone and is free for first timers.
