Beauty tips for reducing nasolabial folds and marionette lines – The Fuss

Fighting the signs of ageing may be a constant battle, whether it’s crow’s feet, sagging jowls or nasolabial folds you’re fighting, targeted beauty products, cutting down on sugar, using SPF and not smoking are all things that can help.

Here are the beauty tips and advice you need to reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

What are nasolabial folds and marionette lines?

Marionette lines are the pronounced crease that runs from the corners of the mouth to down along the chin. It can also refer to nasolabial folds occurring around the top of the mouth. These folds run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth, they separate the cheeks from the upper lip.

What causes them?

As collagen in the face decreases with age, skin tends to crease and fold around the mouth. While they don’t affect everyone, they can give the look of an unhappy expression in those who do experience them.

How to prevent Marionette Lines

It is believed that genetics play a large role in whether or not you develop marionette lines. But there are certain things that can serve to exacerbate the issue, like too much sun exposure, smoking and poor diet.

How to fight the signs of ageing

Our go-to skin expert Caroline Hirons shares the three S’s you want to avoid for ageing skin: Sun, Sugar and Smoking on her blog.

She explains we need to be sensible when it comes to spending time in the sun, sugar is destroying collagen production and smoking draws the oxygen out of your face with every puff.

Looking for anti-ageing skincare products can be a bit of a minefield, there are so many options out there. With the help of Caroline, here are the words you want to make sure the products include:

SPF – It won’t fix ageing signs that have already occurred, but it can certainly help prevent further ones from happening.

Vitamin A – This reverses the signs of ageing by rebuilding collagen and repairing sun damage.

Glycolic/Lactic/Salicylic Acids – The word acid might sound daunting, but used in the right way they can be incredibly beneficial to your skin. When applied as topical exfoliants they resurface the epidermis allowing better product penetration and in the case of some well formulated AHA’s – help rebuild collagen.
Glycolic and Lactic are better for a dryer skin – Salicylic for oily/combination. Don’t go too strong straight away and don’t go mad.

Vitamins C and E – These are both anti-oxidants and sit in the prevention category when it comes to anti-ageing.

Niacinamide  – Also known as vitamin B3. When used on the skin it has shown to stimulate the dermis and in turn, increase the fatty content of the cells along with aiding in the retention of water. As it is shown to enhance barrier function of the epidermis it has had good results with acne sufferers by protecting against bacterial attack.

Make-up tips for hiding marionette lines

Beauty Bible experts Sarah Stacey and Josephine Fairley say that you can create an immediate optical illusion to disguise marionette lines on your face. They suggest stroking light-reflecting concealer down the lines on top of a foundation.

Try the Liz Earle Light Reflecting Concealer (available to buy now in three shades £15.50, John Lewis) for this. You can use this cosmetic ‘trick’ in nasolabial lines from nose to mouth, and they are great for disguising the creases under puffy eyes too.

Solutions for Marionette lines

Of course, natural solutions should be your first try, staying protected in the sun, eating lots of antioxidant-rich foods like berries, broccoli and carrots to help keep the collagen and elastin below the surface of your skin strong.

Marionette lines are a common location for filler injections. Consistent LED treatment is another effective way to plump the area, reducing the appearance of creasing.

Crystal Clear COMCIT could be another option; COMCIT stands for Cryo Oxygen Micro channelling Collagen Induction Therapy and it involves ‘pushing’ cold oxygen deep into the skin to stimulate collagen production. The skin is prepped with the Micro channelling derma roller first to create lots of minute channels for the oxygen and an infusion of skin rejuvenating ingredients to be driven in.

The concept is to cause micro-trauma to the skin triggering your body to respond by sending blood to the area to heal it. As the skin repairs itself, new collagen builds up just below the surface. According to the manufacturer’s information, that process helps wrinkles, lines and depressed scars plump up naturally.

Beauty cream to treat Nasolabial folds

Reviva claims that nasolabial folds are not only the result of years of facial movements like smiles, laughs, etc. – but also the loss of “cheek fat.” The cheeks in a young face have a “fat pad.” With age, that fat falls down toward the nose, skin sags, and nasolabial folds also can be formed.

Their cream’s complex formula includes peptides that address the appearance of deep wrinkles as well as nasolabial folds.

Facial exercises to treat nasolabial folds

This exercise strengthens your facial muscles isometrically to help diminish your nasolabial folds. Begin by sitting down in a comfortable chair with your head tilted back as if you were looking at something on the ceiling. Purse your lips together as if you were forming a kiss and extend your lips to try to kiss the ceiling. Hold this position for about 15 seconds, and then return to the starting position with your head looking forward. The website Wrinkle Free Skin Tips recommends that you perform four repetitions of this exercise two times daily.

This exercise is specifically designed to treat the nasolabial folds, according to cosmetologist and author Asha Bachani. It is performed by placing the index and middle fingers of both hands on both sides of your mouth and pulling backwards with your hands to stretch the skin toward your ears. While holding this stretch, Bachani recommends puckering your mouth in a pouting position. Hold this pucker and stretch for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times.

Another exercise to try is to fill up your mouth with air and close your mouth tight and push the air towards your lips. Move the air to the right of your mouth, and then to the left. Then move the air to the upper mouth and then the lower mouth. During each step hold the air for 5 seconds. You should feel the resistance on the cheeks, upper mouth and lower mouth.
