GOSHEN – Orange County has been recognized as a Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association (AHA) for helping employees eat better and move more, said Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus on Thursday.

fit-friendly-worksiteThe nation’s largest and oldest voluntary organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular diseases has awarded Orange County government its Gold Award for a seventh straight year.

“I’m proud and honored that Orange County has been recognized as a Fit-Friendly Worksite,” Neuhaus said. “We are committed to the health and well-being of our employees and I appreciate the American Heart Association acknowledging us. Our Department of Health and our Healthy Orange Team have offered our staff tips on healthy eating and the importance of health screenings, while encouraging them to stay active and physically fit.”

Orange County was recognized as a Fit-Friendly Worksite for:

  • Increasing healthy eating options at the worksite.
  • Promoting a wellness culture in the workplace.
  • Implementing at least nine criteria outlined by the American Heart Association in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture.
  • Demonstrating measurable outcomes related to workplace wellness.

Orange County government’s Gold award means that it fulfilled criteria such as offering employees physical activity support, increased healthy eating options at offices, and generally promoted a wellness culture. The Fit-Friendly Worksite program has helped bring change in the American workforce by helping worksites make their employees’ health and well-being a priority. According to the AHA, American employers are losing an estimated $225.8 billion a year because of healthcare expenses and health-related losses in productivity.

Employers face $12.7 billion in annual medical expenses due to obesity alone.

“Keeping yourself healthy shouldn’t stop when you go to work,” Orange County Commissioner of Health Dr. Eli Avila said. “Being proactive about what you eat and staying active will keep you healthier and away from the doctor’s office.”
